Axon falls short in bid to win national JUCO title

Ben Axon and his Butler Community College football team fell just short of winning the National Junior College title losing 13-12 to Navarro College, Sunday in the NJCAA championship game in Pittsburgh, Kansas.

The former Manatee High standout led Butler (KS) with 68 yards rushing on 23 carries and caught one pass for 11 yards. He finishes the season as the Grizzlies leading rusher with 1,008 yards on 233 carries (4.2 avg) and nine touchdowns.

It was the first loss for Butler, which entered the game ranked first in the country with 11 victories, including a 16-10 regular season win over Navarro (11-1). The school from Texas was ranked second coming into the game.

Butler’s strategy of going for the two point conversion both times after its touchdowns backfired as pass attempts failed. The Grizzlies led 12-10 when Navarro’s Juventino Sanchez kicked a 28-yard field goal with 5:04 left in the game to account for the final points.
